Two Cats on One Bench

In 2008 a number of sculptures were inaugurated in the Sculpture Park in Holon based on children’s stories. Amongst the artists who participated in this project were Zvika Cantor, David Grossman, Leah Goldberg, Yehuda Atlas and Ilana Goor who designed four benches-sculptures, based on Daphna Helef-Gabay’s “Two Cats on One Bench”. The five are located around a small fenced garden and on each of them bronze sculpted cats. They create a sense of a plaza open to visitors inviting the visitors to sit and view what is happening around them. Each of the cats is depicted in a different position, expressing the amusing struggle between the cats for the cheese as narrated in the book. The benches and the cats depict an everyday situation taking place in public parks in Israel and therefore merge well with the surroundings. “I made five benches” Goor explains “the cats sit on four of them and the other one sits alone and overlooks the others”, and this represents the artist. “I am usually a person who works alone, I don’t like to be connected with other people, or who ask me to create something from a story. However this time there was magic, an immediate connection which turned into a magical garden”. Also Goor encourages a combination between art that is involved in daily lives and the fact that the sculptures serve the visitors of the park serves her purpose.
