Hammer figures were meant to protect individuals, families or entire communities. Belief has it that they destroyed or weakened bad spirits, prevented or cured illness, repelled evil actions and even settled disputes. A prophet or a holy person was in charge of making sure that the hammer figure worked. The figures accumulated powers and raked in a particularly large flock of believers since the tribe members believed in them and their role was to protect an entire village. They were covered with sacks of magical herbs and blades and nails were driven into their bodies. The mirror located in the abdominal area covers an empty space and repels bad spirits thanks to the reflection. Small hammer figures are called "Nakondo" and they helped both individuals and families protect their homes.
