This artwork is one of several artworks by Uri Lifshitz exhibited in the Museum. This Israeli artist’s style is easy to identify whereby he integrates drawing with oil painting on canvas. Lifshitz is well known for his numerous portraits; however this work depicts a different type of portrait, as Golda Meir, who in 1969 became the first woman to lead the State of Israel, appears with her back turned, from behind. This type of unique portrait can arouse questions such as whether a portrait necessarily has to be painted from the front and does the face of the subject turn a painting into a portrait? Indeed, in this portrait painted by Lifshitz, the figure is easily recognizable due to the visual characteristics and identifying features characteristic of Golda, even though she is painted from behind.
