Antoine-Louis Barye was considered to be one of the most esteemed sculptors in France at the start of the 19th century. He knew how to depict animals in a super-realistic form in small sculptures. In the “Camel” sculpture, Louis Barye presents an oriental situation of a Middle-Eastern boy sitting on a camel. On his head is a fez and his upper body is nude. The camel is depicted as accurately as the figure from the joints, the posture of the body and up to the twist of the neck, which demonstrates the artist’s virtuosity.
