A chair in blue and red designed by the Dutch designer and architect Gerrit Thomas Rietveld in 1918. Rietveld was active in the De Stijl movement which is characterized by minimal components, straight lines and the use of only three basic colors. The chair is constructed of simple parts. Its components have been minimized to two boards, a seat and support ensuring its stability by means of screws and wooden rods which are adjoined to each other by pins. The chair was not designed to be a stand-alone piece of furniture but rather as part of the design of the space and the environment. Rietveld dedicated much thought so that all the plains of the chair would fit with each other in the space, as if this is an abstract sculpture. This chair constitutes a kind of three dimensional tribute to the works of the artist Piet Mondriaan who was also a member of the De Stijl movement. The chair encompasses artistic design which on the one hand will serve for the immediate benefit of man and his comfort, and on the other hand will bring to his home an object that combines function and esthetic.
